The one clue is that when searching "in:chats, and clicking on the 'Messages' button, I see, " search operators are not yet supported in Chat" at the top, and at the bottom a message, "There are additional items in your Classic Hangouts archive that match this search." If I click on that link, it shows me the same list of chat messages that ends on Dec 7th. It is still possible to search in the chat app for a specific word/phrase, or to see the history of a conversation with a specific person, but the ability to pull these things up in gmail disappeared on Dec 7th.
